Introduction
Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death in England. Exposure to tobacco smoke also presents a significant risk to non-smokers through the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
The NHS has therefore adopted increasingly strict smoke-free policies in order to protect the health of patients, staff and visitors and to support wider public health objectives.
Healthcare Security Officers play an important role in supporting NHS Trusts to enforce their Smoke-Free policies. This requires a professional, calm and non-judgemental approach that encourages voluntary compliance while maintaining safety.
This course explains the legal framework governing smoke-free environments, the difference between statutory smoke-free law and NHS Trust policy, and the role Healthcare Security Officers play in supporting smoke-free healthcare environments.
